Under the Private Security Industry Authority Act 2001, all individuals wishing to work in the private security industry must undertake a recognised qualification before applying for a licence.This accredited qualification has been developed to meet the requirements of the Security Industry Authority (SIA). It is based on the relevant SIA ‘Specifications for Learning and Qualifications for Close Protection Operatives’ and provides the necessary skills and knowledge for those who wish to apply for an SIA licence and work as a Close Protection Operative.

Skills & Teamwork in Close Protection – essential for the CPO and the knowledge and skills required are developed over a minimum 14 days and this is achieved through a combination of lectures, practical exercises and scenarios based on the common duties of a modern day CPO. The training peaks with an intensive final exercise that combines all the skills and knowledge obtained throughout the duration.

Legislation, Communication & Conflict Management Skills in CP – the role of a CPO requires individuals to be fully conversant with the law and to understand the relationships between the CP industry and official agencies. Again this is achieved by classroom discussions, videos and practical scenarios

Risk assessment, operational planning and safe route selection – it is important to identify and quantify the risks when working as a CPO and good planning and preparation is an essential part of the role. Exercises and classroom activities incorporate a large part of this module where delegates will actually plan and prepare for an operation leading to the final exercise.

Surveillance, Reconnaissance, Incidents & Dilemmas – this module will introduce you to the concept of surveillance and counter surveillance and is key to protecting clients as most pre-meditated attacks include some form of surveillance. Preventative and proactive measures to detect surveillance are taught and related to real life incidents. There must also be procedures for when things don’t go as planned and the ability to think on your feet will be developed during the course.

Techniques for Close Protection Operatives – most of the physical skills required by a CPO are covered in this final module such as vehicle embus – debus drills and convoy driving through to foot techniques and searching procedures will be practiced to hone these essential skill

• If you are a UK passport holder, your passport number entered on the application form. You do not need to submit the actual passport.
• Signed valid passport of any other nationality.
• Driving licence photocard if it was issued by the DVLA in Great Britain. We will not accept the photocard on its own if it was issued by the DVA in Northern Ireland.
• Driving licence photocard and its paper counterpart issued by the DVA in Northern Ireland.

• Valid UK firearms licence with photo.
• Current UK driving licence - paper version (not the paper counterpart to a photocard).

• Bank or building society statement issued to your current address, less than three months old. You can use more than one statement as long as each is issued by a different bank or building society.
• Mortgage statement issued in the last 12 months.
• Utility bill (gas, electric, telephone, water, satellite, cable) issued to your current address within the last three months. NOTE: You can only submit one utility bill in support of your SIA application.
• Pension, endowment or ISA statement issued in last 12 months.
• Letter from H.M. Revenue & Customs, Department of Work and Pensions, employment service, or local authority issued within the last three months. You can submit more than one letter as long as each is issued by a different Government department or a different local authority.
• A credit card statement sent to your current address within the last three months. You can submit more than one statement as long as each is issued by a different issuer.
• Council Tax statement issued in the last 12 months.

Group B (Identity Only)

• Driving licence photocard (without a paper counterpart) issued by the DVA in Northern Ireland.
• Valid EU photo card.
• Marriage certificate or Civil Partnership certificate, with translation if not in English.

Q: What is the aim of the Close Protection Course?
To work as a SIA Close Protection Operative (CPO) or Bodyguard (BG) in the UK you will need to have an SIA licence issued by the Security Industry Authority (SIA). One of the requirements of the SIA licence is that you hold a recognised qualification, and the Level 3 Close Protection Operative meets the requirement for the SIA Licence. The SIA Close Protection course is run over fourteen days and has 140 hours of tuition and 1.5 hours of exams. The exams consist of one multiple-choice paper. A Close Protection licence is required when guarding one or more individuals against assault or against injuries that might be suffered in consequence of the unlawful conduct of others. This applies if your services are supplied for the purposes of or in connection with any contract to a consumer. NOTE: If you work as a Close Protection Operative, Door Supervisor or Security Officer without an SIA licence you are liable up to a fine of £5000 and/or up to 6 months in prison. Q: Who is the Close Protection Operative CPO for?
New entrants to the security industry and those who are returning to it having previously worked prior to the introduction of SIA licensing in 2004. Everyone will need to undertake the SIA training to be able to apply for the SIA licence. Exemptions may apply if appropriate qualifications from a recognised Awarding Body were obtained less than three years ago. Please call us for full details.

Q: What are the benefits of the Close Protection Operative?
The SIA recognised Level 3 Close Protection Operatives will enable you to apply to the SIA for a Door Supervisor licence, and by obtaining this SIA licence you will increase your employment opportunities. You can work as a Close Protection Operative, Door Supervisor or Security Officer. Although the course syllabus will provide you with the basic knowledge needed to pass the exams, our instructors will also demonstrate to you the real life practicalities of being a SIA Close Protection Operative, SIA Door Supervisor or SIA Security Guard, so that when you eventually start work you will feel much more confident in your new role.

Q: What is the average hourly rate for Close Protection Operatives?
Close Protection Operatives or Bodyguards can make anywhere between £20 – £40 an hour depending on the contract. Some CPO’s working in war zones can make up to £500 per day.

Q: What if I am not happy with my training provider?
Dean Training only outsources training to quality training providers. However if you are not satisfied with the service provided by your training provider please contact us and we will investigate the matter.
